A hot topic being discussed currently in town is the ban on South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals. This last fall, the city residents of South Lake Tahoe narrowly (and when we say narrowly, we do mean by less than a hundred votes) passed a measure that would basically keep homeowners from renting their homes in local residential neighborhoods for fewer than 30 days. This decision has still been a hot topic as the millions of revenue dollars our town gets from all of the tourism will impact our local economy.
So what do you need to know if you were thinking of booking South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals for upcoming trips? Here are the facts.
This does not impact ALL vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe. The Nevada side of the South Shore and the county of South Lake Tahoe are not impacted. The “commercial core” down by the casinos, while narrow, is also exempt. While you may hear the word “county” and think that is really far away, it isn’t. You may not be in Al Tahoe or Tahoe Keys, but you would be 5-10 minutes away. South Lake Tahoe is small, meaning that you may not be walking distance to some of the sites you wanted to be able to walk to, but you are still very close by. This ban has also caused a lot of chatter and has implied that we don’t want tourists and that could not be farther from the truth. We love our tourists. This is a tourist town with a majority of the economy built around that industry. You are welcome here!
Seasonal leases are still permitted. There are so many lovely families that look forward to leasing the same home for a season or two. That is still permitted. You still have to stick to the local occupancy rules but that home you rent every year for the winter or the summer is still available to you and your group so long as you respect the local occupancy rules.
This ban is not immediate. The current South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals on the market are still taking bookings through 2021. So if you have a short term reservation coming up, it is still safe.
If you look forward to booking the same vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe during certain weeks, but they fall inside the city limits, don’t worry just yet. There have been multiple appeals filed to overturn this ban. Whatever happens, the local citizens of South Lake Tahoe are working hard to make sure we can find a happy medium so that all can enjoy this beautiful area.
