So your family and friends decided to book a South Lake Tahoe vacation rental and you accepted the invite. However, they all plan on spending their days on the slopes and you have never shredded the white powdery stuff in your life. Do you stay back and enjoy all of the other non-slope activities or go with that whole “When in Rome” saying? If you have never gone skiing or snowboarding, the thought of trying it in a popular tourist destination with an experienced group may feel intimidating. “It sounds fun. It would be great exercise. It is something new. Probably could make the ol’ Instagram feed more diverse…..but what if I get injured? Or what if my group gets annoyed because I am holding them back?” If these are thoughts that have ran through your brain, you came to the right spot. Most of us locals are pretty well versed in this department, so luckily for you, we have some great tips.
Get professional lessons. That seems obvious, we know, but hear us out. No matter where your vacation rental in South Lake Tahoe is, there is a ski resort nearby. We repeat: no matter where your South Lake Tahoe vacation rental is, you have plenty to choose from which means you have LOTS of opportunities to get the best pro lesson in California. Heavenly, Sierra, Kirkwood..we could go on. Learning how to ski or ride from the start is the BEST way to lay the ground work. You may decide that snow sports are not for you, and that is ok. There is plenty more to do in Tahoe. But you may decide you love it. Either way, don’t you want to give it your best so you for sure know your stance on it?
Pick a patient friend. Key word here being patient. So maybe a pricy professional lesson isn’t in the cards right now. That is ok! You still have options. Pick the most patient friend in your group and ask if they can give you a little 1 on 1 at the start of the day. You may need to bribe them with a little apres ski cocktail, but having someone who can dedicate a little bit of their morning to you is the best bet. The plus here is that if after your mini tutorial, you want to head back to your South Lake Tahoe vacation rental? You can! You aren’t locked into an all day pro session or spendy lift ticket.
Borrow your gear or rent. You may have the income to go buy everything brand new, but before you spend a couple grand on your newfound hobby, borrow or rent. There are several rental shops located all throughout town, making it really easy to pick up and drop off close to your vacation rental in South Lake Tahoe. This allows you to get properly fitted by an expert AND figure out what type of gear you want for yourself if you decide you love hitting the slopes. And if you do? You can rent for the season which is a great affordable option while you figure this new activity out.
Hate it? Go do other things! While your group enjoys their time on the mountain, either head back to your vacation rental in South Lake Tahoe or go enjoy other nearby activities. There is shopping, dining, beaches, snow shoeing, gambling which you could even enjoy by playing live casino blackjack online games on your phone, movies, spas and SO much more. Truly, there is no shortage of things to do in South Lake Tahoe.
Love it? Stick with it. If this is something you decide you really love, keep coming back and stay dedicated. You can’t do it one day and expect to come back at the end of the season and just pick up where you left off. Winter conditions are different compared to spring conditions, which can impact your riding and skiing experience. If you love it, make an effort to keep doing it and getting comfortable. Practice makes perfect!
