Perseids Meteor Shower
On the 8-14, look up in the sky! The Perseid meteor shower is seen when the Earth passes through a stream of space debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the greatest activity between August 8 and 14, peaking about August 12. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour. They can be seen all across the sky, but because of the path of Swift-Tuttle’s orbit, Perseids are mostly visible in the northern hemisphere. After the first-quarter moon sets, around 2 a.m., meteors should be more easily visible until dawn. Perseid Meteors will appear to “rain” into the atmosphere from the constellation Perseus, which rises in the northeast around 11 p.m. South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150
