The buzz around Lake Tahoe this weekend is the the $18 million purchase of Kirkwood Mountain Resort by Vail Resorts. In our community, along with Heavenly and Northstar, Vail now has three outstanding mountain resorts under its name. Today, all Vail season pass holders will be able to enjoy the amazing tree skiing and big mountain riding that Kirkwood has to offer.
As exciting as this news is to the Lake, there are some locals who are worried about what this acquisition means to their home mountain. Would Kirkwood ever be the same? Would it lose the passion and the small town feel that they have come to know and love?
According to Blaise Carrig, co-president of Vail, Kirkwood is moving in a positive direction. There are hopes for an increase in snowmaking capabilities and lift upgrades while respecting the lift ticket prices and maintaining the Kirkwood vibe. There is no doubt that Vail will add significant value to Kirkwood. It will be exciting to see the changes and new opportunities for Kirkwood’s future.
