Genoa, NV
Tucked away in the Sierra Nevada foothills sits Nevada’s oldest settlement, Genoa. This is about 40 minutes from South Lake Tahoe and feels like you stepped back in time. This charming, teeny town is known for the Genoa Bar & Saloon which happens to be oldest bar in Nevada. It also has antique shops, Mormon Station Museum, the award-winning French restaurant, La Ferme and David Walley’s 1862 Hot Springs. The Pink House is a must stop for lunch, a great wine selection and cool local gifts. If you booked a South Lake Tahoe vacation rental on the Nevada side, this would be a great, easy trip and the drive is beautiful!
Virginia City, NV
Another popular Nevada gem is situated on the other side of the Truckee Meadows about an hour away from South Lake Tahoe. You will feel like you are starring in your own Western Film with the characteristics of all things Cowboy and Olde West. The town still has original buildings with saloons, wooden sidewalks and mines that are still in operation. Virginia City gained attention because of the discovery of silver and the Comstock Lode and became one of the largest settlements between Denver and San Francisco. Whether you booked a South Lake Tahoe vacation rental on the Nevada side or the California side, this city has something for everyone with antique stores, homemade candy, family activities, gambling and more.
Apple Hill, CA
This darling community is filled with family farms, orchards and wineries. Not only is it perfect for the whole crew, but there is stuff to do during Fall and Summer from picking fresh fruit to pumpkins. There are also some great vendors and places to eat at, at the various farms. If you pass this area on the way to your vacation rental in South Lake Tahoe, be sure to stop and stock up on fresh produce. If you are looking for a day trip, be sure to make the trip. You won’t regret it.
Artown in Reno, NV
If you happen to book a South Lake Tahoe vacation rental during July, Reno turns into Artown which is a month long celebration of regional art. There are tons of free events like dances, concerts, plays, art shows, movies in the park and so much more. The food vendors are always delicious and there are usually wine walks and beer crawls happening as well if you are looking for an adult twist on the day trip.
Hot Springs
We have a few options for hot springs in the area. If you are looking for something in close proximity to the North Shore, the Sierra Hot Springs in Sierraville has a large warm pool, several smaller natural pools and a hot pool inside a meditation dome. This one is clothing optional, as a heads up, but they do offer spa treatments and special dinner events. Markleeville also has hot springs and is 13 miles from the South Shore. This one DOES require clothing and also offers camping as well as some other amenities.
Hope Valley
This day trip is about half an hour away from the South Shore. You can grab a yummy meal at one of the resorts, go hiking and snap beautiful photos. Sorensen’s is a local favorite and they have super cute cabins and cottages you can look at.
